Petroglyphs of Central Asia

Culture and Petroglyphs of Central Asia

The petroglyphs of Central Asia are not only archaeological monuments but also living carriers of cultural meanings. They continue to exist in the memory of local communities, in oral traditions, rituals, and everyday practices of people who have lived for centuries alongside these sacred places.

The project aims to create a digital platform where petroglyphs are presented in two complementary dimensions:

  • as material objects of archaeology studied within the scientific tradition;

  • as elements of cultural heritage enriched with interpretations, symbols, and narratives preserved in the living memory of the people.

Methodological Approach

1. Archaeology and Meaning

Each petroglyph is viewed simultaneously as an object of material culture and as a cultural text. The platform presents two levels of interpretation:

  • archaeological analysis based on generally accepted scientific methods;

  • cultural and vernacular meanings rooted in oral traditions, legends, memories, and personal associations of local residents.

This approach allows us to see not only the fact of image creation but also its place in the worldview of people of the past and the present.

2. Documentation of Local Knowledge

During expeditions, oral histories and interpretations are collected from elders, herders, custodians of sacred sites, and other bearers of traditional knowledge. The materials are recorded through audio, photo, and video documentation, provided that respectful dialogue and informed consent are ensured.

3. Preserving the Diversity of Meanings

The project does not aim to establish a single correct interpretation. On the contrary, it seeks to present a broad spectrum of perceptions—from academic hypotheses to personal and spiritual interpretations. This makes it possible to view petroglyphs as a dynamic part of contemporary culture.

4. Recognition of Authorship and Co-authorship

All materials are published with clear attribution to participants: archaeologists, researchers, governmental and museum institutions, as well as authors of narratives and interpretations. The project is built on principles of respect and equal participation.

Our Goal

To create a space in which the petroglyphs of Central Asia are revealed not only as evidence of ancient history but also as a living cultural resource that connects past and present, science and tradition, researchers and local communities.
